Information on Ayurvedic Herbal Oils:
For many types of Ayurvedic treatments, whether for health care or therapy, oils play an essential role. The term Thailam comes from Tilam, sesame. The oil from sesame seeds is the most commonly used base in the production of medicated oils due to its excellent properties.
As a first step, various plant ingredients are boiled in water according to the recipe. The boiling process continues until only a highly concentrated decoction remains. This decoction is then added to a base oil - mostly sesame or coconut oil - and boiled further. A paste of plant and mineral components is also added. The addition of ingredients, as well as the stirring of the oil, is accompanied by various mantras. The production time for an oil with a moderately complex recipe for two people, for 20 liters of oil, usually takes more than 12 hours.
According to Ayurvedic views and experience, the medicated oil is much more easily absorbed by the human body and integrated into its own metabolism due to the long heating and stirring process. The oil has also taken on the properties of its ingredients and acts in a very subtle way.
