Lunghi & Sarong: Das vielseitigste Tuch für deinen Alltag, Yoga und Wellness

Does this sound familiar? You're packing your bag for a short wellness afternoon or a trip to the Aare river. But the thick terry towel already takes up half the space. After swimming, it's heavy, wet, and takes ages to dry. Or you're at the hammam and want to throw on something light for a coffee after your sauna session – but your bathrobe practically sticks to your skin.

We all know these small but annoying everyday problems. But there's a solution that has been standard in Asian countries for centuries and is becoming increasingly popular here in Switzerland too: the Lunghi (often also called a Sarong).

In this article, you'll discover why this simple, lightweight cloth is so much more than just a piece of fabric and how a Lunghi can make your everyday life, your yoga practice, and your holiday adventures significantly easier (and more stylish!).

What is the actual problem behind this?

Our everyday lives are often crammed with things that serve only one single purpose. We have beach towels for the lido, sauna towels for spa visits, wrap skirts for holidays, picnic blankets for the park, and meditation shawls for yoga.

The result:

  • Overstuffed cupboards and travel bags.

  • Heavy, wet terry towels that start to smell in summer before they finally dry.

  • Constant changing and swapping of clothes when we move around in summer or in wellness areas.

We burden ourselves with far too much luggage instead of opting for clever, multifunctional solutions that simplify everyday life.

Why conventional towels are often frustrating

Normal beach or sauna towels certainly have their place. But let's be honest: anyone who has to pack a wet terry towel into their backpack after a dip in the lake quickly gets annoyed by the extra weight. Plus, thick towels are hard to elegantly tie around your hips when you want to quickly grab an iced tea – they usually slip down after the second step.

Synthetic beach dresses are often not a good alternative either. Heat builds up under synthetic fibres, and the skin can't breathe properly after swimming or sweating. What we need instead is a light, breathable fabric that adapts to our needs.

How can you use a sarong in versatile ways?

A Lunghi or sarong is the ultimate chameleon among textiles. Because the fabric is so light, soft, and breathable (usually made of pure cotton or viscose), it dries extremely quickly and takes up hardly any space.

Here are just some of the countless ways you can use your Lunghi:

  • In wellness & hammam: As a light wrap between sauna sessions. It elegantly covers the body, quickly absorbs moisture, and allows the skin to breathe.

  • At the Aare or public swimming pool: First, it's your light mat on the grass. Afterwards, you wrap it around you as an airy skirt or a halter-neck dress over your bikini to stroll to the buvette.

  • In yoga practice: As a gentle shoulder wrap during final relaxation (Savasana) to keep you from cooling down, or folded as a light seat pad for meditation.

  • When traveling: A Lunghi replaces a beach towel, a scarf for cool evenings, and a light blanket for air-conditioned trains or airplanes in your suitcase.

  • At home: The sarong also looks great as a decorative throw over the sofa or as light sun protection at the window.

Simple routine: How to tie a Lunghi

You don't need to be a fashion designer to wear a sarong stylishly. Here are the three simplest variations:

  1. The simple wrap skirt (beach style): Place the cloth around your hips from behind. Pull the two top ends forward, cross them once tightly, and simply tuck the ends into the waistband you've just created.

  2. The light dress (halter-neck): Pass the cloth from behind under your armpits to the front. Take the two top corners, twist them once or twice in front of your chest, and then tie them together at the nape of your neck.

  3. The asymmetrical throw (one-shoulder): Wrap the cloth under one arm, pull the ends over the other shoulder, and tie them together there. Perfect and elegant for the spa area.

Our tip: Wash your Lunghi separately or with similar colors the first few times to maintain its vibrancy, and avoid fabric softener so that the fabric retains its absorbency.

Realistic expectations & care

A Lunghi is an everyday companion that often becomes even softer and more comfortable over time. Of course, it doesn't replace a fluffy terry towel if you want to snuggle up after a cold winter walk. Its great advantage lies in its lightness, quick drying time, and versatility in warmer environments or during sports.

With proper, gentle care (30-40 degrees machine wash, air dry), your cloth will accompany you for many years – whether on the Aare, in the yoga studio, or on long-distance trips.
