Cardamom (Elaichi, Ela), whose black-brown seeds ripen in green capsules, belongs to the Zingiberceae family, just like ginger and turmeric. The popular spice has a spicy, sweet taste (rasa). All doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, are balanced by cardamom. Agni is strengthened without increasing Pitta.
